Historic inn
- Many people who see the Gotthelfsaal at the Kreuz Sumiswald for the first time can't quite figure out why this room seems so familiar to them. The reason is usually that they know the hall from Franz Schnyder's film adaptations of Gotthelf. Anyone who has seen the film "Ueli der Pächter," for example, will undoubtedly remember the auction scene that took place in the hall of the Kreuz. Equally well known are the dance scenes from "Geld und Geist" and "Käserei in der Vehfreude," which were also filmed at the Kreuz.
- The Gotthelfsaal, with its surrounding gallery, is the oldest wooden hall in the Emmental region. Until the 1950s, it was even used as a gymnasium.
- When the painter Albert Anker stayed in the Emmental in 1897 to sketch the land and people for illustrations in Gotthelf books, he wrote to his family on June 9: "I am staying at the Hotel Kreuz, a very old house with a large Tenzsesi." The late Baroque Kreuz dates back to 1742. However, it is believed that an inn had existed here since 1664. References to this on a coat of arms window in the church in Sumiswald are interpreted as such. Albert Anker even wrote in his letter of June 9, 1897: "According to the owner, the inn sign dates from 1635."
- The Kreuz in Sumiswald was also ideally located for the horse-drawn mail service of the time, which ran from Bern via Sumiswald-Huttwil-Wolhusen to Lucerne. Once they reached the Kreuz in Sumiswald, the horses had to be changed.
