Aspi Linde, Obergoldbach
The village lime tree of the entire Emmental.
Aspi Linde
Probably the most famous lime tree in the Emmental is the Aspilinde on the Aspiegg near Obergoldbach. This is the only place in the Emmental where the borders of the four former districts of Burgdorf, Konolfingen, Signau, and Trachselwald meet. This makes the Aspiegg the center of the region and the Aspilinde the "village lime tree of the entire Emmental." Many people perceive this spot as a place of power, but its history has probably also given it its special character. Free farmers probably gathered here as far back as the time of the Helvetii. The lime tree was a meeting place for socializing, a place for celebrations and also for the many couples who made the pilgrimage to the hill to kiss under the lime tree and bring happiness and new vitality to their relationship.
The tree was felled in 1985 because it had been severely damaged by storms and lightning. It can be assumed that the felled lime tree had at least one predecessor, so the tradition was continued and a young lime tree was planted in its place. As a memorial to the old lime tree, the sculptor Urs P. Twellmann created a sculpture from the old tree trunk. Many different faces and figures adorn this sculpture, which is intended to commemorate the people who came to linger under the lime tree over many generations. Whenever a tree is planted together, as in this case, it is a sign of hope, faith in the future, and togetherness.
